Into Thin Air - Jon Krakauer
I bought this book so I could have something to read when I was just sitting around camp. I think it is really good. It is about Jon Krakauer's trip up Mt. Everest.  He was in the 1996 expedition that had so many people killed in it.

Into The Wild - Jon Krakauer
I haven't read this yet, but I've been told its good.  It is a true story about a guy that goes into the Alaska wilderness and tries to live for a year on his own. He is found dead in an abandoned school bus out in the middle of no where and never finishes the year.

A Walk in the Woods - Bill Bryson
Great book. A friend of mine loaned me his. It is about a 40 year old man who has never been backpacking. He sudddenly decides he is going to through hike the Appilatian Trail. He gets an old friend he hadn't heard from in 20 years to hike with him. Stephen Katz, the friend, shows up extremely overweight, a heavy smoker, and a recovering alcoholic/drug user. It is an unlikely duo who make for an interesting story that is both funny and imformative. It almost made me want to through hike the AT. I have only recently learned that this book is just a story and never actually happened, although the way it is written, it is very convincing.

Soft Paths
If you only read one book on backpacking, I think this one is the most important.  It teaches you how to be a good outdoor steward.  Teaches all the fundamentals of Leave No Trace camping.  Everyone who goes backpacking or camping should read this so they take care of our wilderness.

Lots of recipes and food planning info in this book. It is put out by the National Outdoor Leadership School so you know it has to be quality.

Same type of book as above. I don't own it , my brother does.  I think it has more information on how to plan menus and what types of food are best for you.

Outward Bound Wilderness First Aid
This was the book they gave us when I took my Wilderness First Responder class.  I haven't read much of it but if it is as good as my course was then it is really good.  Outward Bound has been around for a long time in the outdoor recreation industry.

The New Wilderness Handbook
It isn't exactly new anymore. The last copyright date is 1984. If you don't know who Paul Petzoldt is, then you have alot to learn. This man was an increadible mountaineer/outdoorsman. He started the U.S. Outward Bound program and he started NOLS. He has an unbelievable knowledge of the outdoors. He explains things very clearly. As a Ranger, I really appreciated his insight and ability to explain topics. I even learned some stuff. Petzoldt covers the topics of outdoor adventure extrememly well for both the novice and the teacher. You will need to pick up Soft Paths to fill in some of the old school environmental issues though.

Outdoor Leadership: Technique, Common Sense & Self-Confidence

A great book on leadership. The difference between this book and all the other general leadership books is that this one gives it more of an emphasis with being outdoors. Anyone who finds themselves leading in the outdoors needs to read this book. It has a lot of good stuff in it.
