Equipment I use
If you click on the highlited words below, it will take you to REI's web site where you can directly buy that product.
I am in no way saying that this is the best or the only equipment out there. This is just what I have. Some of this is the best because of my opinion and some is because it was the best I could afford. There are some people who have asked me what I use and this gives an idea of that.
Gregory
Denali Pro
Great pack. Tough, comfortable, durable, and big.
"You don't carry a Gregory, you wear it" - Gregory.
Nalgene
Waterbottles
I use the Lexan bottle exclusively. After seeing the non-lexan water bottle
shattering on a trip in the Smokies because of the cold, I had to switch.
- Gators
to keep the rain and stuff out of my boots. These are heavy duty ones.
- Seattle
Sombrero
I use for rain hat and to keep sun off.
- Hydroseal
Bags
for bear bags on personal trips becaue they are waterproof. Also used for carrying extra clothes
- Mountaineer First Aid kit.
- 2nd
Demension Sleeping Bag
- Ploar guard 3D 15 degree sleeping bag
- Windstopper
Fleece Jacket
- Windproof fleece. Equivalent to wearing a 200 wt fleece and a wind layer on top
- Lightwedge
3
- three man three season tent
Capilene
shirt and pants.
I use this for winter backpacking. It helps keep you warm but keeps you from
sweating to death too.
Chaco. The BEST sandal ever made, period. I don't wear tennis shoes for my normal shoe like most people do, I wear these because they are the most comfortable footwear I've ever had.
Vasque Sundowners - not just a really great boot, but you go through about a pair of boots a year and these last the whole summer and are fairly inexpensive to replace.
Best compression sacks I've ever seen.
Headlamp. Keeps your hands free when setting up tent at night or whatever else you are doing in the dark.
- Zoom - backup light keep in my glove box
- Duo - my Search and Rescue headlamp lets you lock it off so it won't accidentally get turned on. Also has high beam and low beam.
- Camprest LE - This was my sleeping pad. It is big and heavy. I now use it for car camping
- Lightfoam Full legnth - This is my primary sleeping pad. It is just the right size. Just the right thickness. I believe the name has changed since I got it.
My chair, never leave basecamp without it! It is the high back.
Waterproofing for boots and rain jacket. A product made by Granger makes some boot water proffing and leather conditioning that is better. I just can't find it anymore.
Like gold nuggets in the backcountrySome people don't like these. Well, energy bars were never meant to taste like candy, but these are the best tasting ones I've found and they work on me better other energy bars.
My old bear bag. It is water proof and I have some things that I want to keep dry. (the one linked here is not the exact same one as mine, but is about the same) I now use the OR Hydroseal bags (above) because they are lighter but still rain proof.
I bought these in the trading post at Philmont. They are thick enough to stop most of the rubbing they come in contact with.
Carhartt Dungarees and Bibs - I use these for my work pants at Philmont and at home. Tough as nails with lots of handy pockets.
MSR - Mountain Safety Research
MSR Dragon Fly stove - heats water like a wisperlite but you can control the heat so it will simmer as well.
Pur
Guide water filter - I don't like the taste of polar pure and I'm not very patient, so I got this.

Another place to order gear through mail order
This is a local store back home. They have been really good to me and are active in Scouting. If you are in the Jackson, MS area, I recomend them. Tell them I sent you.
